Data Management
Overview:
This course is quite different from the rest of the high school mathematics courses. This course is designed to broaden students’ understanding of mathematics as it relates to managing data. MDM4U integrates the mathematical theory of probability and statistics with many real world applications.
At the Earl of March, Data Management is taught in a computer lab, which allows students to apply methods for organizing and analysing large amounts of information; solve problems involving probability and statistics; and carry out three culminating investigations that integrate probability and statistical concepts and skills. (There is no exam.)
This course is an excellent basis for understanding probability and statistics, which are used in a wide variety of fields, including business, all sciences, engineering, the social sciences, and the humanities.

Prerequisite:
Functions, Grade 11, University Preparation, or Functions and Applications, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
The Summative Projects:
For the first project, students are asked to write or rewrite a children’s story to integrate probability concepts and organizers. Students demonstrate their understanding of probability, set theory and notation, permutations and combinations through their characters’ calculations and conclusions.
In the second project, students design a fun, interesting and profitable game of chance. They play it with their classmates (using “data dollars”) then compare the theoretical and experimental probabilities and average winnings.
The third and largest project is requires students to survey their fellow students (anonymously), to analyse the data, and to draw conclusions about Earl of March students in general.
